This was discovered by Dr. James Kroll in Texas. A wildlife pear that ripens in late fall and holds on the tree until Thanksgiving! The real benefit to using Dr. Deer pears is that they have small fruit in clusters and tend to hold onto them well into late fall. The fruit is excellent for deer and wildlife, and will bring them in throughout the hunting season. The Dr. Deer Pear is grafted and thus self-fertile, though you will see better fruit production with more pollinators.

Pruning Pear trees should be pruned annually in the winter when they are dormant. See the Pruning section in our Learning Center.
Fertilization Do not fertilize at planting. Once the trees are established, fertilize in early spring (Mar-April) as growth begins. Do not fertilize in the fall, which could promote late season tender growth that can be damaged by early frosts.
Watering Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center.
