The AU Producer plum is a highly productive cultivar developed by Auburn University, specifically bred for its ability to thrive in the Southeastern U.S. climate. Known for its early ripening and high fruit yield, this plum produces medium-sized, sweet, and firm fruits with a rich, vibrant red color. The tree is moderately vigorous and features a compact growth habit, making it ideal for both home orchards and commercial production. The AU Producer is a self-pollinating variety, meaning it can bear fruit without the need for cross-pollination, although planting other plum varieties nearby can enhance yields.
Preferring full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0), the AU Producer plum is well-suited for USDA zones 6–9. It demonstrates excellent resistance to common plum diseases such as black knot and bacterial canker, making it easier to maintain and care for. With proper pruning, watering, and fertilization, the AU Producer provides a reliable and consistent harvest of flavorful plums, making it a popular choice for both commercial orchards and backyard gardens.

Pruning | Prune plum trees in late winter by removing dead wood, thinning the center for airflow, shortening side branches to 3-4 buds, and cutting away suckers to encourage healthy growth and fruiting. Once mature, peaches should be pruned yearly for best fruit production. |
Fertilization | Do not fertilize at planting. Once the trees are established, fertilize in early spring (Mar-April) as growth begins. Do not fertilize in the fall, which could promote late season tender growth that can be damaged by early frosts. |
Watering | Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center. |
