The American Strawberry Bush, also known as Wahoo or Bursting Heart, is an airy shrub that can grow 6 – 12 ft in size. This native bush can tolerate full shade, but thrives in partial shade, making this ideal for understory planting. The Strawberry Bush enjoys moist to dry soils.
During summer, Strawberry Bush produces small capsules which ripen to red, looking similar to strawberries or raspberries. In September to October, these capsules split to reveal bright red berries, giving the plant its “Bursting Heart” namesake. Turkey and songbirds enjoy these berries as a food source. Whitetail readily dine on the leaves and small limbs (though not considered a primary food source due to the lack of Strawberry Bush in the wild). Butterflies and moths are attracted to the small flowers when blooming. The many uses of the Strawberry Bush by various wildlife, combined with the ability to plant in shade make this tree a must have for any forest food plot.

|Do not fertilize at planting. Once the trees are established, fertilize in early spring (Mar-April) as growth begins. Do not fertilize in the fall, which could promote late season tender growth that can be damaged by early frosts.
|Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center.
