The Dr. Merrill Japanese Magnolia is a stunning deciduous tree known for its breathtaking early-spring blooms. One of the earliest magnolias to flower, ‘Dr. Merrill’ covers itself in large, star-shaped blossoms of pure white, often tinged with soft pink at the base. Each fragrant flower features up to 15 petals, creating a spectacular cloud of blooms before the foliage emerges.
This vigorous grower is an excellent choice for a specimen tree, courtyard accent, or to plant in pairs along drives and walkways. Its rounded, spreading canopy provides shade in summer, while its bare branches add graceful structure to the winter landscape. Relatively low-maintenance once established, ‘Dr. Merrill’ thrives in well-drained soil and is more cold-hardy than many other magnolias, making it a reliable choice for northern climates.

| Fertilization | It is not recommended to fertilize trees at the time of planting or young trees. Excessive fertilizing may cause premature fruit drop. Apply a balanced slow release fertilizer after the tree is established and begins to break dormancy in spring. |
| Watering | Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center. |
