The Pin Oak does well where water stands for weeks at a time. Naturally occurring in stream banks and floodplains. Do not plant in standing water, roots must be established to survive wet conditions. Several years are needed after transplanting for the adaptive root system to tolerate flooding. Plant trees in a slightly raised mound or bed if the soil is poorly drained. Native to the midwest and the eastern United States. Loves acidic soils. One of the most attractive food sources for waterfowl and turkeys. Cold hardy to USDA plant zones 5-8. New trees can produce fruit in 20+ years depending on care and climate. The success of new trees is heavily dependent on the care received during and after planting.

Fertilization | Do not fertilize at planting. Once the trees are established, fertilize in early spring (Mar-April) as growth begins. Do not fertilize in the fall, which could promote late season tender growth that can be damaged by early frosts. |
Watering | Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center. |
