The Southern Catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides), named from an old American Indian word, is a classic native flowering tree valued for its bold summer blooms, broad canopy, and rugged adaptability. This short-trunked, rounded shade tree typically reaches 30–40 feet tall, forming an irregular, natural silhouette that brings character and presence to yards, fields, food plots, and native landscapes. In early summer, Southern Catalpa erupts in large, long-lasting panicles of white, bell-shaped flowers, each marked with yellow and purple accents that draw in bees, butterflies, and other pollinators in abundance.
Naturally adapted to floodplains and bottomlands, Southern Catalpa is remarkably tough and forgiving, thriving in a wide range of soils and tolerating heat, humidity, poor drainage, drought, and adverse growing conditions once established. Native to Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi, it has proven its resilience by becoming widely naturalized from New England and New York through Ohio and across the central and southern plains, making it a dependable choice for diverse climates and landscapes.
With its oversized heart-shaped leaves, dramatic flowering display, and strong native roots, the Southern Catalpa Tree is an excellent option for land stewards seeking a pollinator-friendly, fast-growing, adaptable shade tree that delivers both beauty and ecological value year after year.

| Fertilization | Do not fertilize at planting. Once the trees are established, fertilize in early spring (Mar-April) as growth begins. Do not fertilize in the fall, which could promote late season tender growth that can be damaged by early frosts. |
| Watering | Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center. |
